If you enjoy boardgames and other games, join JIGG.  Membership is free and there are branches of our club all over Japan.    The JIGG Kanagawa group is very active, and we are a great group of people.  We tend to hold game days in each others homes.  You can host if you want to, but don`t have to.  Some people enjoy hosting and others don`t.

"Let`s Take A Walk" by ELF Learning

Grammar Songs - The CD, "Let's Take A Walk" by ELF Learning
Eric Kane and friends have released a children`s CD for the EFL/ESL classroom. He muses it is probably not what you are thinking:
"The songs are all original and have full arrangements and real instruments (for the most part). It's a mix of songs for very young learners through much older students (late elementary school)."
-Kane wrote by Email.
I just listened to the whole CD and it is a very pleasant listen.The music is very well done, and will be pleasant to listen to in the classroom, in your car or wherever. I could see parents of young English speaking children buying it, and of course EFL/ESL teachers for classroom use.

My 1979 edition of Strunk and White's The Elements of Style reigns over my workspace from its place of honor on my bookshelf. It's a slim volume because, like all good writing, the needless words have been omitted. The original, written as a college textbook in 1918 by Professor William Strunk, Jr., is available at Bartleby.com. The following recommendations bring the study of grammar into the Internet age with their use of email, forums, and the Web.
11 Rules of Writing
Today's first site condenses English grammar down to just eleven rules. Drawing heavily from The Elements of Style, an anonymous college teacher created these rules based on his experience grading freshman papers. Each rule is hyperlinked to examples of correct and incorrect usage. For questions not covered by the eleven rules, peruse the Frequently Asked Questions page. And for extra credit, click on the New Word of the Day (at the bottom of the page) to scroll through some high-school level vocabulary.
Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation
"Effective Writing. Rule 1. Use concrete rather than vague language." As the title implies, Jane Straus's guide is divided into two sections: grammar and punctuation. Each is further organized into rules with examples (navigate these with the drop-down menus), exercises and tests. The quizzes are not interactive (try printing them instead) and include answer keys on the same page. A print edition of The Blue Book is also available for purchase.
Common Errors In English
From "AM/PM" to "your/you're," this clickable alphabetic list of errors is fun to peruse. Sometimes the easiest way to learn proper grammar, is to learn what NOT to say. For example, did you know a "pompom" is a large gun, but the fuzzy end of ski hat is a "pompon"? And a narrow confining garment is a "straitjacket" not a "straightjacket." Just click on any phrase for the complete skinny.

Teaching English r and l to EFL Learners, a Lexical approach

Teaching English /r/ and /l/ to EFL learners: a lexical approach (parts 1-3
final)

The article is at the link below. These ideas were developed teaching JHS, SHS
and university. They could be adapted to younger learners but the
teacher-student interaction would be different. I think teaching pronunciation
can be very challenging and would rather do it in a team teaching situation
(rather than solo at a university). Please note that these are activities in
order to integrate a pronunciation strand onto any syllabus. They are not
intended for teaching phonetics to English majors or teaching majors (if you
teach at a university).

English /r/, /l/ and contrasts across these two categories of sounds are often
cited as pronunciation and listening perception problems for a variety of EFL
learners, most from E. Asia. The language backgrounds most often associated with
these problems are Japanese, Korean, Chinese and some languages of SE Asia
(e.g., Thai but also Cantonese Chinese). Other language speakers have also
expressed an interest in improving their pronunciation of English /r/ and /l/,
including Russian and German EFL learners.

Perhaps the most well-known group to have a problem with the two categories of
sounds is Japanese EFL learners. This could be because their native language
background creates the most difficult problems to overcome, both in terms of
listening perception and spoken production. It could also be because Japan
attained affluence before most of the rest of Asia and hired native speakers of
English to help teach and model the language. So a lot of information based on
knowledge and experience of Japanese and Japanese learners of EFL has been
exchanged and discussed in 'global ELT'.

Tired of Japan, Teach in Prague

Finding work in Prague, especially if you are a non EU teacher, is becoming harder.


I figured I'd write my personal tips down and hopefully it will help a couple of new teachers make it in their new host country.

For starters, I've personally trained and job coached about 1000 new TEFL teachers as a TEFL trainer for The Language House TEFL, so I think I have a pretty solid base to give some suggestions.

This Week's Experiment: Penny Chemistry, part 1
Greetings from our home at the beach.  My trip to Mississippi went wonderfully, but there was a noticeable lack of internet access.  It was great to see my nephew and his girl friend, and delightful to have a surprise visit from my brother too.  
The long drive gave me plenty of thinking time, which will lead to some big changes on The Happy Scientist website.  I have started working to organize the experiments and videos into curriculum units, to make it even easier for you to explore the science.  Don't worry, you will still be able to use the site just as you do now, but in the near future you will also have the option for a more organized approach.
This week's experiment is a classic, but one that has hidden potential for taking it much further.  This activity will be the start of several experiments to let us peek into the world of chemistry.

Finding Out 1 Software

Just started using the Finding Out 1 Software again, after a long while.  I haven`t taught children
for a few years now.   I just took over from another teacher at my school and I want to improve their phonics knowledge and reading skills.    To do this as painlessly as possible, one method I am
using is David Paul`s FO1 Software.

Yesterday, the 7-11 year olds were laughing at the humour and animations of this software.   Though at this point it is old, it is still one of my favourites in the classroom.     I feel there is much solid pedagogy here and less downtime than some of the other titles on offer.

The Comfort Zone
